“Short Discharge Time”: a tool to compare cells and batteries in power applications

When selecting cells for a power battery, it is useful to have the ability to quickly compare various cell technologies, and calculate the resulting pack resistance and efficiency, independently of capacity, voltage or chemistry. Here we propose a way of … Continue reading

Caught on video: Santa delivers a Tesla

If you've been reading SolarChargedDriving.Com recently, you know that my brother recently got a Tesla Model S, and that it just so happened that it arrived just in time for Christmas.

I got a brief ride in the Model S Performance version with my brother a couple of days ago -- and I'm hoping to be able to do a fairly thorough test drive and review sometime in the next couple of weeks. But, until I get a chance to get three or four hours to shoot the footage I'd need to do a semi-decent video review of the Model S, this goofy Christmas video above will have to suffice.

Tesla Model S: Smooth, sporty and silent

tesla-model-s-maineditors-blog-entry3Most likely, fewer than 10,000 people have ever had a ride in a Tesla Model S.

Today, I, and my mom – along with my brother, who’s the happy new owner of Model S, No. 1984 (yes, that’s really his Model S number) – took a quick spin in his brand new metallic blue Model S up Boulder Creek Canyon this afternoon.

No, I didn’t get a chance to take a turn behind the wheel, though Thomas promised me a future opportunity.

We were under time duress – Thomas had to zip off to a concert he was playing in (he’s a professional cellist) – and we only had about 15 minutes. And Thomas wanted a chance to show off the car to us before putting someone else behind the wheel.

Solar EV canopies increasingly visible in U.S.

Okay, so the video above is a bit PR-ie (as in public relations-ie). But it's still worth a look if you're into chronicling and making note of the ever growing number of solar EV charging canopy stations in the United States, including more than a few in highly visible and public places such as where the one highlighted in this YouTube video is: The San Diego Zoo.

By our count -- and we know we do not have all of the solar EV charging canopies/solar-powered EV charging stations in the U.S. on our map -- there are several more of these stations in equally public places.

The World’s First Electric Monster Truck: Bigfoot No. 20

For some reason, this reminds me very much of my childhood days in the driveway with my remote control monster truck. Odyssey Battery, which is a subsidiary of Enersys, and Bigfoot teamed up to create the world’s first full-size electric monster truck, dubbed, creatively, Bigfoot No. 20. It may not have the ear-drum-shattering-power of your traditional [...]

Tesla’s Fast Charging Stations: Game Changer or Fast Path to Bankruptcy?

Earlier this year, Elon Musk announced his plan to build solar powered, fast charging stations across America, available to Tesla Model S owners to use for free. A lot of my colleagues were very excited about this prospective announcement. To me, it seems downright impossible: high fixed capital costs, and no revenue from the stations.  [...]

Solar EV, e-bike charging taking off in France

sunpod-autoeditors-blog-entry3I wish I knew French, because, from what I can tell, solar-charged driving is really starting to take off there, especially in Southern France and in Corsica, exciting EV + PV growth about which SolarChargedDriving.Com guest columnist Albert Graham has written.

In fact, I recently got an e-mail from Raphael Briere, President and Operation Director for ADVANSOLAR, which describes itself as “The Leader in Solar EV Mobility in France.”

ADVANSOLAR designs and fabricates solar-charging stations for EVs and for e-bikes.

The Road of the Future

We spend a lot of time here at OnElectricCars.com talking about the innovations of the vehicles on the road, but we neglect to mention what is happening in the pavement itself.  If electric vehicles become more mainstream, there will be numerous opportunities to change the way we drive and fuel up.  Could the road charge [...]

Have Santa stuff solar in your stocking this year

solar-in-stockingWhat are you getting in your stocking this X-mas?

Or, maybe, better put, what are you using to power the Christmas lights you turn on so Santa can find your stocking ;-)

This Christmas, make sure Santa stuffs solar in your stocking, and chuck that whole coal thing altogether. No more dirty stockings, or, for that matter, dirty air, right?

Cheers, and Merry Christmas from SolarChargedDriving.Com!

Re-test Victpower A123 cells after 9 month sitting

In this video i'm showing how stable are my cells that i bought from victpower last year. I ahd tested them in march for capacity and internal resistance ( with old crapy RI meter but their result was pretty accurate over the cells. I recall that we had ordered over 130 cells and we took 10 randoms cells to test their real performances. In the following video i proceed to measure their voltage and internal resistance and overall shape to show you how stable they are from cell to cell and how they preserved their shape without any sing of leak or current leak or any change in their original physical and electrical state. The result is that over all 10 random cells from the 130+ qty, all their voltage is with in +/-2mV and their internal resistance is under 0.8miliohm ! The cells still look strong and sealed just like when i received 9 month ago. I can say i am really satisfied with these results. About teh capacity test i will retest them soom, but i can say that usually with stable result like that i'm pretty sure that it doesn't changed at all. Doc, from the endless sphere forum
