Flashing a solar-charged EV grin on Long Island
SolarChargedDriving.Com frequently gets e-mail, pictures, videos, etc. from people around the U.S., and around the world, who've plugged into EV + PV.
Below is a great e-mail from Joe in Long Island, New York. Joe's been flashing the solar-charged EV grin a lot lately thanks to a Mitsubishi iMiEV and a 5.6 kW home solar system.
Thank you for sharing your solar-charged driving story with us, Joe!
Here is Joe's story -->
"In 2000, we decided to install a 5.6 kW solar PV system and never regretted it. Even at that time I knew an EV would be in our future. In 2001 we purchased a “Classic Prius” one of the first in our area but no plug.
I’ve thought about converting an ICE to EV and even looked at some that were converted but just didn’t feel the technology was there. In 2005, we purchased a second generation Prius, but still no plug. I thought about upgrading it to a PHEV but I was holding out for a pure EV.
In 2012 we purchased a Mitsubishi iMiEV knowing it would be a perfect fit with our PV system and lifestyle. The PV + EV grin is so overwhelming, I’m sure it will never end. Each time we use the iMiEV, knowing it is being fueled by the sun, it gives us an “oh so good feeling”.
Even the naysayers telling us that PV will never catch on and that the Prius was a waste of money back in 2001 are now re-thinking their past thoughts. Now here is the real clincher: We went from “Mean to Green”. We owned a 1984 Corvette since new and put 13,000 miles on it.
And guess what? We traded it in on the iMiEV! My how people change."

Zero tailpipe emissions better for human health
Yes, it’s true EVs are not truly zero emission vehicles, though if you power them with renewable energy generated electricity, they come pretty darn close.
However, regardless of how the electricity is generated for EVs, they are zero tailpipe emissions vehicles -- I much prefer this term to zero emissions, because it’s 100 percent accurate.
Yet the whole no carbon monoxide, no sulfur dioxide, no nitrous oxide, no particulates being blown directly into your face, and lungs (sadly, you’re stuck sucking down fumes from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars even if you’re walking or biking in urban areas) “thing” seems to gets lost on most people when it comes to electric vehicles.

The solar company and car company today (Feb. 20) announced a partnership to make solar power more affordable and available to Honda and Acura customers in the U.S., providing a cleaner source of electricity at a lower cost than utility-supplied power.

NYT fesses up on Model S-Gate -- Sort of
A quick follow-up to my entry on the NYT-inspired “Model S Gate”: The New York Times put its Reader Representative Margaret Sullivan on the Tesla Model S case. In an entry published today (Feb. 18), Sullivan concludes that NYT reporter John Broder wasn’t as careful as he should have been in following written directions which explain how to properly do a long-distance trip in a Model S. She also chides Tesla for not sufficiently emphasizing the proper long-distance Model S regimen with Broder.
However, the real news in terms of my previous entry in which I contend Tesla CEO Elon Musk is right to take on gas cars on their home field, the long-distance road trip, is that, sadly (believe me, I would love for most consumers to give EVs a fair chance), a bunch of the comments below Sullivan’s article confirm what I argue in my earlier column: The average person emphasizes convenience and versatility above ALL other factors when weighing whether to ditch an old technology (gas cars) for a new one (pure EVs).
Check out this doozy of a comment from “Nancy” from Great Neck, complete with “high” caliber grammar and spelling -->
Believe me, there are many other similar comments below Sullivan’s entry.

Tesla's frontal attack on gas cars right way to go
There’s been a ton of talk and debate about the Tesla Model S this week thanks to a lightning rod of an article by New York Times reporter John Broder in which he describes an unsuccessful attempt to drive the Model S from Washington, D.C. to Boston relying on Tesla’s two East Coast Supercharger stations. Most of the debate has centered around the veracity of Broder’s report and/or the relative “idiocy” of his approach to making the trip and (not) charging the car.
I’m not going to focus on that. Instead, I’m going to pick up a strand of discussion long-time EV advocate Chelsea Sexton put forward in a piece published on Wired.Com. In it, the always articulate Sexton argues that Tesla – and others – shouldn’t be pushing a direct comparison between pure EVs and gasoline cars.
Take EVs for what they are, meaning highly efficient, fun-to-drive cars that surpass gasoline cars in many – but not all respects, writes Sexton. Don’t force the point of comparison to be long-distance road trips, because that’s not where pure EVs excel, at least not yet, she contends.
I disagree with Sexton -- and probably most EV advocates -- and align myself on this one with Elon Musk, whose strategy appears to be a full-frontal attack on gas cars.
Why do I think Musk is right?
Because for most people (early EV adopters and EV advocates are not most people, as much as I wish they were), convenience (more of it!), and versatility (more of it!) are the primary motivations for making a switch to a new technology. Unfortunately, convenience and versatility are precisely where pure EVs fall short (plug-in hybrid EVs do not fall short here, which is why they’re doing better than pure EVs).

First test drive in a Tesla Model S
I got my first chance behind the wheel of a Tesla Model S Performance Edition Monday.
And, wow, is the Model S quick! I know: That’s hardly a revelation, Christof!
But it’s one thing to read about how the Model S Performance Version has instant torque (443 lbs) and a huge amount of horsepower (410 hp) immediately for the taking. It’s another altogether to feel it yourself as you punch the accelerator (can’t call it a gas pedal anymore – sweet!).
In fact, I didn’t have the guts, nor really the chance, to truly step on it in my brother’s metallic blue Model S, which he’s had for a little more than a month. There was too much traffic on I-25 between Fort Collins, Colo. and Erie, Colo., which is where we found ourselves in Model S #1984 on this bright, sunny Monday afternoon along Colorado’s scenic Front Range where we both live -- my brother in Boulder and me in Aurora, Colo.
