Fox Reports False Telsa Battery Range Problems

EVs WILL have to match gas cars to win out

rreditors-blog-entry3EV advocates and journalists like to indicate that somehow it's ridiculous/preposterous, or both, to imply that pure EVs will have to go as far as a gas car goes on a tank of gas and easily be refueld in 5 minutes or less.

Indeed, these advocates often state that it's a "myth" EVs need to match gas cars in order to go fully mainstream, as Nikkie Gordon-Bloomfield does in the lead paragraph in a recent entry on PlugInCars.Com, Electric Car HyperCharging is Hyperbole, For Now.

Gordon-Bloomfield writes -->"There is a pervasive MYTH (my caps) that electric cars must have five-minute refueling times, and travel 500 miles between charges, before they become mainstream."

Actually, it's not a complete myth that EVs must match gas cars on range and fueling in order to go mainstream.

Finally Ignored the Gas Engine Long Enough

Even though I wrote a post about it, I was still surprised to see this message. I managed to run the car around only on batteries for the entire month and probably hit the gas few only a couple miles the month before. So the Volt did the math and realized that the engine really [&hellip

Are squirrels a serious threat to a solar system?

flickr-squirrel2editors-blog-entry3So, what do a home solar system, squirrel/critter guard (more commonly known as chicken wire) and way too much yard work have to do with one another?

In my case, quite a lot, unfortunately.

Three years ago, when REC Solar installed our 5.59 kW home solar system (which has been working great, having pumped out about 25,000 kWh of electricity), I had no idea that squirrels represent a threat to a PV system (think gnaw, gnaw, gnaw on your panel wires), or that squirrel guard was an option to prevent squirrel disaster.

No one at REC Solar talked to me about squirrels and squirrel/critter guard.

Testing a Twizy at EV 'Disneyland' in Paris

renault-frontalbert-grahamI recently had the pleasure of visiting the Renault Z.E. Center located on Ile Seguin, (Boulogne-Billancourt) just a few minutes outside of Paris.  The Z.E. stands for Zero Emissions – a reference to Renault’s popular line of Electrical Vehicles (EVs).

At the Center, Renault showcases all of the vehicles which make up their Z.E. line of cars – The Renault ZOE (5-door hatchback), The Renault Fluence Z.E. (4-door saloon small family car), the Renault Kangoo Z.E. (a small utility van which is used extensively in France for deliveries) and the Renault Twizy (more on this one in just a bit).

Unique in France, and a first in Europe as well, the center has a 2 km driving track (with small hills, sharp turns and even the eventual traffic signage and traffic light! ) which permits extensive testing of the vehicles under real road conditions - all while remaining off road.

Ultracapacitors in Tesla's Future?

Utilities need to stop whining about home solar

WV-planteditors-blog-entry3Are you as sick and tired as I am of Big Utilities complaining about distributive rooftop solar threatening their monopolistic, centralized, and, frankly, thoroughly un-American business model?

There's more and more talk about Big Utilities trying to undercut net-metering, a key provision that allows people like me to push extra solar we produce with our 5.59 kW system during the day back onto the grid and which requires, in our case, that our utility Xcel pay us the whopping per kWh rate of about 3 cents -- compared to the 11 cents per kWh rate Xcel charges my neighbors to use the excess electricity our solar system has produced.

Fairest driving tax = vehicle weight + miles driven

leaf-going-lefteditors-blog-entry3There's been more and more talk of plug-in vehicles and how they're "cheating" the gasoline tax system.

Different proposals have been put forward -- flat taxes/fees for plug-in cars, etc. However, there's only one tax formula that's ultimately fairest for all involved.

Democratic Committee denies EV + PV advocate

dnceditors-blog-entry3So, I just published a guest column from long-time EV and EV + PV advocate Paul Scott in which he wrote excitedly about an upcoming opportunity he anticipated having in which he was going to be able to talk to President Obama personally about EVs and solar-charged driving. Scott was planning to pay more than $30,000 to attend a fundraising event at which he could press the flesh with the President.

Turns out Scott won't be getting his chance. According to a story on Mother Nature Network, the Democratic National Committee has returned Scott's check. Apprently the right-wing blogsphere was blowing a lot of hot wind (fancy that, eh?) about Scott "paying off" Obama to push his oh-so-outrageous "green" agenda.

Mr. President: We can drive our cars on sunshine

paul-scottIf you had something important to say to the President, how much would you spend to get his ear?

On June 7, I'll be eating lunch with President Obama for $32,400. Two dozen other high-dollar donors will be there, but I'll be the only one in the room who does his own laundry. I'm not wealthy--I'm spending a large percentage of my retirement savings, at age 60, to sit at the table.

Because it's a deeply troubling time in our country and in our world. Whether you choose to believe it or not, climate change is a greater threat to life on Earth than at any time in modern history.
